Question by john d: I have hard water, and my water heater keeps getting "jammed" with lime. Any alternatives to water softeners?

Our town has very hard water and every time they do work on the main, my water heater impeller gets jammed with lime chunks. My repairman has recommended Culligan, but I was wondering if there are any less costly alternatives out there.

absolutely, get an inline filter installed. Between the wall and the water heater, install an inline filter ( Wal-Mart ). Make sure that the cut-off valve is on the wall before the filter because every time you are to change the filter you must cut off the water first. Make sure it is installed in the cold water supply line coming into the water heater. Plumber can install one for under 100 bucks in about an hour. Culligan man must be related to your repairman.
