Qu Yuan's Biography

Qu Yuan, given name Ping, was born in the Warring States Period on 7th December, 340 BCE. He was one of the greatest patriotic poets in China. Qu Yuan was a governor when he was young. He had a broad knowledge, clever mind and was very articulate. In order to contribute to his country, he made the constitution and advocated some important political strategies such as making reasonable laws, recommended intelligent people for office and sought war against the neighbouring Qin.
The emperor trusted in him, but some governors were jealous of him, so they slandered him to the emperor. He was subsequently demoted. On 5th of May, 278 BCE, he committed suicide by jumping into the Miluo River in Hunan Province, Boluo county.He was 62 when he died.
Qu Yuan wrote some famous poems, such as Lisao, Tian Wen, Jiu Ge and Jiu Zhang. His poems were translated into many languages throughout the world, and he was praised by many critics.
In 1953, the World Peace Committee decided that Qu Yuan (China), Rabelais (France), José Julián Martà Pérez (Cuba) and Mikolaj Koperniki (Poland) should be remembered as culturally famous people for peace.
